Legende se pletu na tradiciji japanskih žena iz ribarskih naselja koje izranjaju bisere iz mora. Zovu ih Ama i njihove fotografije neodoljivo teraju da verujemo da su sirene stvarno postojale.
Mlade žene ronile bi na dah u često ledenoj vodi, po dva minuta, i izranjale samo na nekoliko sekundi da bi ponovo uhvatile vazduh. Tražile su školjke.
Zaranjale bi po 60 puta u cugu, i tako tri puta dnevno. Verovalo se da žene mogu duže da zadrže dah od muškaraca, a sa takvom posvećenošću, mogle su u jednoj sezoni da zarade više nego muškarci u njihovom selu za godinu dana.
„Ama“ znači „žene mora“, tako su ih zvali.
Moderan način života olakšao je pravila igre, sada rone opremljene maskama i ronilačkim odelima. Ipak, njihove fotografije neuporedive su s onim kojima je japanski fotograf Jošijuki Ivase sačuvao sećanje na poslednje sirene.
This is the work of Japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Iwase (1904-2001). Yoshiyuki was born in in Onjuku, a fishing village on the pacific side of the Chiba peninsula, near Tokyo Bay. He spent his career photographing the ama free divers, women who fished along the coast.
